What is Storage Insurance?

Storage insurance that’s 70% cheaper than buying direct. Immediate Certificate for Business & Personal Storage insurance from the Specialists – it’s also known as Storage Container Insurance or Self Storage Insurance and it protects your possessions from damage, theft, or loss whilst they are contained within a unit at a storage facility.

Some policies, including ours, also cover the transit of your possessions to and from the facility in which they are stored.  Self Storage facilities can add large markups on insurance add-ons, so it usually pays to shop around and buy your insurance independently.

Do I Need Storage Insurance?

In most situations, if you are leaving your belongings in a storage unit for any length of time, they’ll need additional protection. That’s what our specialist storage cover is for.

Our Self Storage Insurance cover provides protection against things like fire, theft, & much more, allowing you to rest assured that the contents of your storage unit are always covered.  We provide immediate insurance certificates.

Self Storage Insurance is also compulsory at most self storage facilities.  As a result, many storage providers offer insurance which people take as an easy option, but these Storage Insurance Policies are typically much more expensive.

Your Self Storage facility will typically ask that your possessions are insured; however, you don’t have to take out their insurance and you will almost certainly save money by insuring with us.

…Or Business Assets?

More and more businesses are opting for commercial self-storage options to store excess inventory, unused furniture, paperwork & more, securely stored off-premises in commercial storage facilities.

Important To Know: Storage Unit Requirements

There are many different types of storage facility in the UK and it’s important to be aware of several factors that we consider necessary for storage providers to meet as a minimum requirement.

The location must be a purpose-built storage facility with CCTV, fire alarms, and access to the facility is either given by staff present at the premises or by a secure key code provided to paying customers.

We constantly compare our rates and coverage with other insurance and storage companies to make sure we provide the highest level of cover and market-leading prices.

In the event of an incident likely to result in a claim, please visit our help centre for details on how to claim.

What’s Covered By Our Storage Insurance Policies?

Important To Know: Types of Storage

Self-storage units come in different forms including individual units, shipping containers, lock-ups, garages, wooden crates, and box storage.

Individual storage units are the most common form of self-storage and are located in purpose-built or converted facilities. They range in size from small lockers to larger units that can hold the contents of a house. They offer security features like gated access, climate control, 24-hour access, and CCTV. As the customer, you have exclusive access to their unit with a lock and key. Rentals are flexible, and the size and length can be chosen based on your requirements.

Shipping containers have become popular due to their versatility and durability. They are weather-resistant and designed to withstand harsh conditions. They offer high security and can be fitted with extras like shelving, lighting, and climate control. However, for insurance coverage, the location must be a purpose-built storage facility with CCTV, fire alarms, and secure access.

Our policies cover both individual storage units and container storage as long as the facility itself meets our requirements.  The location must be a purpose-built storage facility with CCTV, fire alarms, and access to the facility is either given by staff present at the premises or by a secure key code provided to paying customers.

Lock-ups and garages may seem like an affordable option, but they lack proper security, climate control, and protection from the elements. They are often vulnerable to break-ins and theft, and the temperature, moisture, and humidity can cause damage over time. They also lack fire protection systems and insurance coverage. It’s best to choose a purpose-built storage facility for adequate security, climate control, and insurance coverage.  Both are excluded from our storage insurance policies.

Wooden crates are used for personal and commercial storage, particularly for fragile or valuable items. They offer good protection during transit and are often used for short-term storage.  Because they can have both environmental and pest problems, they are not recommended for long-term storage and are excluded from our insurance policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

In short, it depends. Most storage facilities will require you to insure the possessions contained within their unit.

Generally, storage providers take very limited responsibility for anything that may occur to your belongings, even though the unit is kept on their premises.

Therefore taking out insurance for storage units is important if you want to keep your items protected from damage, theft or other unexpected problems that can occur.

A surprisingly high number of thefts and, unfortunately, even fires and flooding occur in storage facilities.

As the customer, it is your responsibility to calculate the sum of the goods you have in storage. You can do this by adding up the amount you paid for all of the goods combined or the value of items stored can be determined independently by a professional valuer.

Please note: the maximum single item value depends on your level of cover.

Bronze – Max Single Item: £2,500
Silver – Max Single Item: £5,000 (Includes bike cover)
Gold – Max Single Item: £7,500 (Includes bike cover)

No, you are not covered for accidental damage under this policy. This includes whilst your goods are in transit.

No, but your storage facility may request you have a self storage insurance policy. Although sometimes not compulsory, it is recommended that you cover your items. Self-storage companies will do their best to keep your belongings safe and protected, but they can’t offer an absolute guarantee; for example, if there’s extreme weather they can’t guarantee that it will not cause flooding.

Yes, we can cover you if you’re using a shipping container in a purpose built self-storage facility and have selected the Storage Container Insurance.

Please note, you must select that you’re using a shipping container when getting a quote as these are not covered under the standard Self Storage Insurance (when you’re using a room/unit inside of the facility).

Yes. We cover both commercial and personal belongings in storage units, and you will be asked to select this whilst getting a quote. Please note, if you’re a business covering stock you will need to go for the Silver or Gold policy as Bronze doesn’t include stock cover.

Please refer to the policy wordings for full details on what items we can and can’t cover.

The cost of storage insurance depends on a number of factors including size, location and what items you store in it. It is difficult to give an average cost for self-storage, because there can be many different variables within the policy, as well as there being massive differences in price depending on your insurance provider.

One thing is for sure, it is always good to compare storage insurance online before taking out a policy with the storage facility provider, as it could help you save money!

We cover any unit that meets our insurance requirements.

Please note: we do not cover any contents being stored within wooden crates.

The storage facility must be within England, Wales or Scotland and you must be a UK resident in order to purchase our insurance policy.

Please Note: We are able to provide cover for customers that store whilst out of the UK, for example, because you are moving abroad or simply because you are working abroad temporarily.  In order to provide this cover, we require an address in the UK for correspondence.

As the customer, it is your responsibility to calculate the sum of the goods you have in storage. You can do this by adding up the amount you paid for all of the goods combined or the value of items stored can be determined independently by a professional valuer.
