Why Your Mobility Scooter Might Not Be Holding a Charge

It can be incredibly frustrating to leave the house on your mobility scooter with what you thought was a full charge – only to discover that the battery is draining far quicker than you planned for.

There could be a number of reasons behind why your mobility scooter isn’t holding a charge correctly – here, we’ve outlined a few things to check.

1. Check The Battery Condition

The first and most obvious reason why your battery may be losing charge quicker than it should is simply because it may need replacing.

If your battery is old or used frequently, it may be time to look at simply getting a new one. If you’re not sure, a battery tester can help determine if the battery is holding a charge or needs to be replaced.

2. Battery Connections

If you know that your battery isn’t due to be replaced, you may want to consider checking the battery connections to ensure that they are clean and tight enough.

3. Damage Or Wear & Tear

The battery may not charge if it is damaged. Experiencing extreme temperatures or dropping/crashing the scooter can damage the battery. It may be necessary to replace the battery in this case.

4. Charger Is Faulty

If your mobility scooter’s charger is not working correctly, it won’t be charging the battery. Check to make sure your charger is plugged in correctly and that the power outlet itself is working properly.

If you’ve done both of these things and the charger is still not working, you may need to replace it altogether.

5. Battery Is Overheating

Another reason your battery may not be holding charge sufficiently is because it’s overheating. This could be caused by using the scooter for an extended period of time, using it in extreme temperatures, or even by leaving it in direct sunlight.

If you believe this may apply to you, the best solution is to allow the battery to cool down before attempting to charge it.

6. Water Damage

While most mobility scooters are designed to protect the battery from rain and water damage, it can still happen.

Accidentally submerging the battery in water, for example, driving it through deep puddles, can cause damage to the battery. You may need to consider having your mobility scooter serviced or the battery replaced if this is the case.
